The purpose of the Student Council is to represent students’ views (for example, to the Senior Leadership Team about issues that affect students, or to organisations or individuals who are involved in the school) and to act as representatives of the school out in the community.
Every class has an elected Councillor who attends meetings regularly (usually once a month). Councillors bring ideas and opinions from their own classes to the meetings and are also expected to feed back to them after meetings. Student Councillors are also expected to play a role in some of the decision-making processes in school, for example by interviewing prospective members of staff. Through the election process and the procedure of meetings, pupils learn about democracy, planning, persuasion, presentation, negotiation and fund-raising.
This link to every class in the school is very important as it enables pupils’ views to be taken into account when school policies are designed, or when decisions are made.
Ipsley’s Student Council works with members of our community, such as Redditch Town Councillors and Community Support Officers, and is involved in community projects, such as serving Christmas lunch to the OAP lunch group at Christchurch, Matchborough. These activities are enjoyed by all concerned as they provide a valuable alternative perspective on life.
Ipsley expects a lot from its Student Councillors and they work very hard on behalf of the school and their fellow pupils; in return they gain useful life skills, try new experiences and have a lot of fun!
