30 Aug Activity Leaders
We were appointed to be Sports Leaders in September and as part of our responsibilities we have supported children in other schools to learn to play in a variety of sports. However, at the beginning of this term we were asked to take on an additional responsibility as Activity Leaders, helping to support the KS2 lunchtime activities on the playground. We carried out a survey with the children and asked them what activities they would like to see on the playground and how we can best support them. The vast majority said they wanted to play football and basketball and that they wanted to have the games organised with line markings, rules and referees. This has now been operating for the last three weeks and each day we organise the football games and basketball games on the playground and organise the teams, referee the matches and ensure that all of the children enjoy their lunchtime.
As Activity Leaders this has been a really useful activity for us to be involved with . We have worked together as a team to organise the events, we have set up the rules and we have learnt a huge amount about the best ways to communicate with the younger children and lead them to ensure that they play well and safely. We are supported by staff at lunchtime and they also ensure that we have the skills and knowledge to ensure we can referees and organise the children fairly.
This opportunity as an Activity Leader has built up our confidence both within school and out of school for example when we play for our local football teams we have noticed that we have become more confident with our ability to communicate with the other team members. Also we have a lot more respect for the referee!! Its has also taught us the skill to have more patience with other people and to understand the differing needs of other children. Its has also been a great opportunity to have our leadership role included on our future CV and also to inform Arrow Vale of our experience within the student leaders team when we transfer there in the summer.
If there are any year 7 pupils who are in school who are thinking about applying to be a Sports leader next year we would definitely say go ahead and apply as we have really enjoyed the first half term undertaking this role and we definitely look forward to expanding our role into the next half term.
